Which safety gloves do you need?
Every safety glove is tested to a European standard, and the pictogram on the back of the hand tells you what it protects against. EN 388 covers mechanical risks such as abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures, which makes it the rating to check on cut resistant gloves and impact protection gloves. EN ISO 374 covers chemicals and micro-organisms, so look for it on chemical resistant gloves for lab, cleaning and workshop use. EN 407 covers heat and flame for heat resistant gloves and welding gloves, and EN 511 covers cold for thermal gloves. Identify the main hazard first, then choose a glove that carries the matching standard.
For general handling, a coated grip glove such as the Showa 370 or Skytec Beta 1 gives dexterity at a low cost per pair. Where you need hygiene or splash protection for short tasks, disposable nitrile gloves are the simplest option.
Finding the right fit and features
Once the hazard is covered, compare grip, coating, cuff length and insulation. Nitrile coatings hold up against oil and abrasion, latex grips well in dry and damp conditions, and PU suits precision work. A longer cuff or gauntlet protects the wrist and forearm when handling liquids or sharp materials, while fleece or acrylic lining keeps hands warm on winter sites and in cold stores. Waterproof gloves are worth having wherever rain, washing or wet handling is involved. Most styles come in sizes 6 to 11, and fit matters: a glove that is too big reduces grip and wears out faster.
