While spring cleaning is a distant memory, it is once again getting to that time in year when a touch of household cleaning is required; the weather is getting colder, condensation and damp are more common in the mornings. Giving your home a deep clean every few months allows you to keep on top of small issues that could be hazardous to your health and the health of your family if left unchecked.
Mould, mildew, damp or even the build up of dust can promote respiratory tract irritation without proper cleaning and protection. Having the right PPE for household cleaning is important because often the cure is almost as bad as the symptom; anti-fungal agents and bleaches can be damaging if they touch the eyes or bare skin. Extra care should also be taken by those who are pregnant or immuno-compromised.
Luckily the solution is literally at hand. You should always wear protective gloves for cleaning tasks but selecting the right one is key, as you can read more of in our Chemical Gloves post. You may also want to consider whether a single-use protective glove or a reusable glove is more appropriate. Reusable protective gloves like Showa 730 are a worthwhile investment but when cleaning mould you may want to dispose of all cleaning PPE after you have used it to avoid cross-contamination so something like a Skytec Teal might be better.
When tackling any job involving mould or mildew a facemask, is essential. The best solution is an FFP3 mask. While a common Type IIR might seem like enough, FFP3 respirators protect against fine dusts and, most importantly, biological contaminants like fungal spores and bacteria. Masks like the 3030V or the AMF-3V provide optimum levels of protection as well as comfort.
Finally it is always sensible to have some sort of eye protection for cleaning, especially when using harsh chemicals or working on surfaces such as ceilings which may cause drips and droplets. As you will be wearing a mask, it is important that you select avoid fogging and have clear vision so either set of goggles or a set of safety glasses is always a good idea. A simple transparent lens with a closefitting frame will offer adequate protection
Whatever you wear, safe cleaning practices are essential and should always be observed. When cleaning mouldy surfaces follow these simple steps:
- Keep the space ventilated by opening a window
- Read the instructions on any cleaning solution ahead of application
- Use a damp cloth to wipe the mould off. Do not brush it as this will release spores
- If using bleach, do not mix with any product containing ammonia as this can create deadly gas
- Once the mould is gone, remove the rest of the moisture with a dry cloth
- Throw away your cleaning rag and any contaminated PPE
- Vacuum the room you have just cleaned to collect any spores
