Make the most out of the autumn months to make sure your garden blossoms next year
Although the growing season is coming to an end, October is an extremely busy month for dedicated gardeners. Now is the best time to get your garden cleared and prepared for next year, and putting in the work at this time of year ensures that your garden will be looking its best next spring.
So, we have put together a list of the top jobs that you need to get done to make sure that you get the most out of your garden.
Seed collecting
Collect and dry the seeds from your favourite flowers, herbs, and vegetables before storing them away ready to be planted next spring. This is a great way to increase the number of plants in your garden, and best of all it’s free. We find that envelopes make the best storage solution for seeds, but don’t forget the write the plant name on before putting them away!
Start sowing for next summer
Autumn is a great time to start sowing hardy annuals like Cerinthe, Ammi, scabiosa and cornflowers ready for them to flower early next summer. If you’re a beginner at sowing from seed, tomatoes and marigolds can be particularly easy to start indoors over the winter.
Give your pots and hanging baskets a refresh
You don’t want to have spent pots and hanging baskets sitting around through the winter, so empty them now and make sure to compost the contents. If you’d like some colour in your pots through the winter, heathers, cyclamen, winter pansies and skimmia are all good options.
Sow your winter greens
It might seem like hard work now, but we promise that your stomach will thank you in the months to come! Some of our favourites include kale, land cress, Pak choi, mizuna, lamb's lettuce and mustard.
Plant your spring bulbs
The winter months can seem never ending, but they are a lot easier to bear when you know that you have some beautiful spring flowers on the way. So, make sure to fill your pots and borders with crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths, and bluebells!
Stay Protected
Your garden has plenty to keep you busy at this time of year, but whatever you're doing make sure your hands are protected. In these colder months nothing feels better than a cosy pair of thermal gloves to keep your hands clean and warm.
