Understanding Cut Resistance:
EN388 is the European standard used to assess the protective capabilities of safety gloves against cuts, tears, punctures, and abrasions.
It includes two distinct tests for evaluating cut resistance:
- The coupe test: measures cut resistance to a circular blade and is rated on a scale of one to five.
- The TDM test: measures cut resistances to a straight blade and is rated from A to F.
Cut-Resistant Materials:
Meeting the EN388 standard requires the use of resilient and supple materials for hand protection. Various materials and fibres play a crucial role in providing cut protection. Some of the commonly used ones include gloves made from:
- Aramids: These heat-resistant synthetic fibres, including renowned textiles like Kevlar®, find extensive use in military applications, offering B to C level cut resistance.
- High-performance polyethylene (HPPE): Known for their ultralightweight properties, several branded synthetic fibres fall under this category. Spectra®, reputed to be 15 times stronger than steel, offers level B to D cut resistance. Dyneema®, dubbed "the world's strongest fibre," provides B to D cut resistance.
These fibres can also be blended with others, such as stainless steel or composite fibres, resulting in gloves with even greater cut protection.
Moreover, many cut-resistant gloves incorporate materials to augment grip and abrasion resistance. They are often coated for additional protection and enhanced cut resistance, with common coating materials including polyurethane (PU), latex, bi-polymer, nitrile, and nitrile/PVC foam (HPT).
Cut Protection Levels:
The most recent cut resistance testing system has transitioned to using letter grades in place of numeric ratings. This grading system ranges from A to F, with A denoting the lowest level of protection and F representing the highest degree of protection.
A - Low cut protection
B - low / medium cut protection
C - medium / high cut protection
D - high cut protection
E - very high cut protection
F - ultra-high cut protection
